UL 489 Miniature Circuit Breakers:
As a general rule, miniature circuit breakers (MCB) that have been designed in accordance with European standard EN/IEC 60 898 cannot be used in North America. However, MCBs have now been developed on the basis of the 5SY range of supplementary protectors which meet the special requirements of UL 489 and are therefore suitable for use in both North American and International Applications.
What is UL 489?
UL 489 is the UL Standard for Safety for Molded-Case Circuit Breakers, Molded-Case Switches and Circuit-Breaker Enclosures. The requirements are specifically intended to provide service entrance, feeder and branch circuit protection in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. Siemens line of 5SJ4 Miniature Circuit Breakers meets the requirements for Branch Circuit Protection.
5SJ4 Description
5SJ4…-.HG41 Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB) are 1-, 2- & 3-pole thermal/magnetic overcurrent protection devices that are intended for general industrial use such as Branch Circuit Protection. They are UL Listed (File No. E243414, Volume 1, Section 1) in accordance with UL 489, 10th edition “Molded-Case Circuit Breakers, Molded–Case Switches and Circuit-Breaker Enclosures”; and, certified to Canadian Standards (CSA 22.2 No. 5.02). They are provided with a manual means for opening a circuit and they are not ambient compensated.

Suitable for Branch Circuit Protection Applications up to 240 VAC and 60 VDC (1-pole); and, up to 240 VAC and 125 VDC (2- and 3-pole).
UL Listed and Certified to Canadian Standards, File E243414.
HACR Rated.
High Interrupting Rating of up to 14,000 (Type HSJ) or 10,000 (Type NSJ) Maximum RMS Symmetrical Amps at 240 VAC; and, 10,000 Amps (Type HSJ and Type NSJ) at 60/125 VDC.
40°C Calibration Base (Industrial Applications).
Can be used for “field wiring” applications; AWG 14 to AWG 4, Copper (Cu) Only.
Suitable for ‘reverse feed’ applications.
Compact Dimensions: 1-pole MCBs are 4.33 in. (110 mm) high, 0.71 in. (18 mm) wide, and 2.76 in. (70 mm) deep (from mounting rail). 2- and 3-pole MCB widths are multiples of the 1-pole MCB.
5SJ4 Miniature Circuit Breakers are also CE marked according to EN/IEC 60 898 making them suitable for use in International applications.

Trip Characteristic C: Designed for general device protection in control circuits and all other miniature circuit breaker systems. Magnetic trip point is 5 to 10 times the MCB rating.
Trip Characteristic D: Designed for high inrush loads. Magnetic trip point is 10 to 20 times the MCB rating.
Rated voltage of 230 VAC (1-pole); and, three single pole devices together in a 400 VAC branch.
High Interrupting Rating (Icn) of up to 15,000 Amps (Type HSJ) and, 10,000 Amps (Type NSJ).
Features - Common
Available with 1-, 2- or 3-Poles.
Available from 0.3 to 63 Amps depending on the device selected.
Visible Indicator for ON and OFF/Trip.
