Siemens Modernizes Bar Mills in the United States and Mexico

ATLANTA -- Siemens Metals Technologies received orders to modernize bar mills at Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) in Pittsboro, Indiana, U.S.A., and at Talleres y Aceros S.A. de C.V. in Ixtaczoquitlán, Mexico. Both projects are scheduled for completion by the end of 2008.

Steel Dynamics, Inc. operates a bar mill in their its electric-furnace minimill in Pittsboro, /Indiana. The rolling mill was originally supplied by the former Pomini, which is  (now part of Siemens Metals Technologies), in 1996 and is capable of producing 550,000 short tons (500,000 metric tons) of SBQ (special bar quality) grades per year. Siemens will provide engineering and mill equipment, including two new roughing stands of the Red Ring type, as well as advisory and training services. The plant upgrade will enable SDI to roll larger blooms and increase its yearly output to 750,000 short tons (680,000 metric tons) per year.

The 300,000 metric tons per year bar mill of the Mexican steel company located in Ixtaczoquitlán, Veracruz will be upgraded to allow larger billets to be rolled. Siemens Metals Technologies will install new mechanical and electrical equipment, which includes three new roughing stands of the Red Ring type in HVH (horizontal-vertical-horizontal) arrangement, bar-thermoprocessing equipment and a new 78-meter-long cooling bed with automated cutting, counting and bundling systems.
