Siemens Awarded $12.6 Million Contract For A Baggage Handling System At Buffalo Airport
ATLANTA -- Siemens today announced it was awarded a $12.6 million contract from LP Ciminelli to design and build a new baggage handling system at Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BNIA) in Buffalo, N.Y. Overall project completion is scheduled for early 2008.
The baggage handling system from Siemens is part of a $22.5 million project to expand the terminal at BNIA and update the airport’s current system to meet the latest safety and security requirements from the TSA.
The scope of the contract includes more than 4,500 feet of conveyor, six baggage claim units and 19 high speed diverters. Additionally, Siemens will design the baggage handling system with integrated explosive detection screening, which will incorporate two security “pods.” Siemens will also install six explosive detection screening machines, three for each security “pod”.
"Siemens has a proven ability to design and build a high-quality, integrated, airport logistics solution,” said Dar Almeter, President, LP Ciminelli Construction Company. “They also presented the best solution in terms of total cost of ownership.”
”Siemens is committed to providing the technology and support required to create a safe and stress free environment for passengers traveling through Buffalo,” said Gary Cline, Vice-President, Airport Logistics Division of Siemens in the U.S. “Through our design-build approach, we will implement a baggage handling solution that will better enable BNIA to foster this environment for the passengers it serves.”
In 2006, Buffalo Niagara International Airport served more than five million passengers.
