Keep Your Process Control System Safe

Taking steps to secure your process control system from hackers and viruses is becoming more important every day.  The U.S. government sees cyber security breaches as a significant threat to the nation’s critical infrastructure.

New regulations and guidelines have been developed for the chemical industry and electric utilities. For example, the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism standard, 6 CFR Part 27, took effect in 2007, and the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Cyber Security standard was created in 2006.  Failure to follow these new guidelines could result in fines or operation shutdown.

The subject of industrial security is also making mainstream news. CNN.com recently ran a segment on securing control systems. View the article here.

This issue of PAS News keeps you informed on industrial security and invites you to join us for up-coming events.

How do you know whether the system you are using is secure?

There is a new organization whose purpose is to create a globally recognizable certification body for industrial security called the ISA Security Compliance Instititute (ISCI). By leveraging industry best practices and standards, such as ISA S99, the ISCI will provide suppliers and customers with a common set of requirements for testing and certifying control systems and products. Being a founding member, Siemens encourages you to learn more.

Security Self-assessment Tool

The CS2SAT tool allows you to perform a security self-assessment of your plant. You will define an architecture and answer questions and the tool provides you with recommendations based on industry benchmarks.  Attendees of the June 2007 Siemens Automation Summit received a free copy of the tool. It will be made available for public distribution through ISA in the near future

Your Resource for Industrial Security is now available through our website at www.sea.siemens.com/industrialsecurity.
You will find information on key security technology, as well as the most important references, standards, and guidelines on this subject. You can hear from industry experts such as ISA, NERC, Dept of Homeland Security, and Idaho National Labs.
